What is Phenolphthalein?
Phenolphthalein is a weak organic acid that appears as small white or slightly yellow crystals at room temperature. It is odorless, tasteless, and insoluble in water, but easily soluble in alcohol (ethanol) and ether. Dissolve in an alcohol solution to make an acid-base indicator, which appears colorless in acidic solutions and red in alkaline or alkali metal carbonate solutions. However, in concentrated alkaline solutions, colorless tri metal salts will be generated, and the red color will fade away.
Given this characteristic, it is commonly used as an indicator for acid-base titration in the laboratory, with a color change range of pH 8.2 to 10.0, from colorless to red.
